Philip John Atwell (February 6, 1937 – November 7, 2025)

Philip John Atwell, 88, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025, in his hometown.

Born on February 6, 1937, in Philadelphia, Phil was the beloved son of the late William and Florence (Abele) Atwell. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Carlene Margaret Atwell; his cherished granddaughter, Samantha Marie; his parents ; and his nine brothers and sisters.

Phil is survived by his devoted daughter, Phyllis (Ed) Perkins; his grandchildren, Robert and Matthew; and many nieces and nephews who adored his humor, kindness, and steadfast faith.

Throughout his life, Phil worked in a variety of roles that reflected his hardworking and adaptable spirit — from record store clerk and exterminator to television repairman and auto parts salesman. Beyond his work, Phil’s greatest passions were music and old movies. He built an extensive private collection of hundreds of songs and classic films, which brought him endless joy. He took tremendous pride in his grandsons’ musical achievements and never missed an opportunity to brag about them.

Above all, Phil loved his family and God. His faith was rekindled later in life, and he found great peace and purpose in returning to the Church.

A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Holy Innocents Church on Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia. The Mass will be presided over by Father Thomas Higgins, who played an instrumental role in welcoming Phil back into the Church.

Phil will be remembered for his deep faith, his love of music and film, his devotion to family, and the warmth and humor he shared with all who knew him.
